Billy grew up hard, they never had much, lost his dad at 14, in the coal mines,
Billy always wondered what his dad did down those trails in that old coal mine, Billy got dad’s watch, his pick and light, Billy’s watch now, weren’t much for sure, Just a little watch, on a long gold chain, scraped but working fine all these years, Old black hole, dark twisting mine, Reckon the devil’s down there, on one of them long black trails, Don’t care as long as he’s got his own pick and light, Just hope he’d let us go home when we’d done enough time, Billy met Sarah ,and married her, starts a little life, on their own, Bought a little house with some money dad left him, Saved all the rest to save their boys from the mines, Sarah always says , a little prayer, to bring daddy back on home, Good Lord willin’ pray the creek don’t rise, bring daddy on home, keep him alive, Billy made foreman, paid a little more, the first one down, and last one out, It’s his job to to bring em’ in and out, One night the smell of fire, their worse fear, A man screamed once, time for nothing else, Billy felt ol’ devil was near, hung that watch on a line,
Found all his crew late next day, 12 went down and 12 staggered out, Old black hole, dark twisting mine, Reckon the devil’s down there, on one of them long black trails, Don’t care as long as he’s got his own pick and light , Just hope he’d let us go home when we’d done enough time,
