He wipe stinging sweat from his eyes,
Got to be a better way to keep us alive,
Plowing this black ground, gonna wind up dead,
Grow corn and sugar cane, that’s what I was raised to do,
Sell it off for a dollar, I might clear a dime,

Jim Ballentine, he’s a south-land plow boy,
Rides an iron mule, sewing crops in the dirt,
Put a little still, in the cypress bottoms,
And runs his boiler, using farm grade diesel,
Late night work, but it pay the bills,

He makes a side-line living, by the night time sun,
Got ten ways out and only one way in,
Quiet as a cotton mouth, on still night water,
Makes him a living, by the Carolina Moon,
Makes him a living, by the Carolina Moon,

Come sundown he’ll be, lighting the fire,
Only light he’s got is a pale white moon,
Takes his red bone hound, he know what to do,
Lets Jim know, if something’s coming around,
Don’t bark at all, just give a real low growl,

He makes a side-line living, by the night time sun,
Got ten ways out and only one way in,
Quiet as a cotton mouth, on still night water,
Makes him a living, by the Carolina Moon,
Makes him a living, by the Carolina Moon,
Yeah he makes him a living, by the Carolina Moon,
